A white 28-year-old man accused of yelling racial slurs at a Black man and trying to strike him with a metal T-ball bat is facing two felony charges.
Joshua Adam Valentine, the alleged assailant, was charged two weeks ago in Oklahoma County District Court with one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of malicious harassment.
Prosecutors believe Mr. Valentine intended to intimidate or harass Chris Cooks, who is Black, by yelling “White pride” and racial slurs at Mr. Cook, and attempting to punch him with his fist, court records say.
Mr. Cooks was with his two sons at an apartment complex swimming pool in the 6000 block of SW 12th Street on July 20 when he said Mr. Valentine randomly started yelling “White pride” and racial slurs and “got in his face in an aggressive manner,” police reported in a probable cause affidavit.
Cooks defended himself when Valentine, a stranger, tried to punch him, police reported.
