SOAPBOX 95

We talked yesterday about how proud we were of the football players of Northwestern University in their attempt to gain more rights and representation in this very profitable industry of college athletics. This really could be the start of a lot of old people’s worse nightmares. And what for? They’re only being the head strong, confident young adults that are willing to stand up for change or when they notice inequality. Doesn’t that sound like the mantra of every university in America?
But the real disappointing part is the fact that the NCAA keeps releasing statements that continue to harp on the theme of ‘money’ and the students being labeled as ‘professionals’ as being the central idea of the unionization, even as the student-athletes continue to state that their case is about medical and scholarship protection. The unseen, ugly side of college sports is that a lot of players get scholarships taken away for a variety of reasons that are not always negative, forcing some kids to drop out or foot the bill for tuition themselves. That’s what Northwestern quarterback, Kain Colter and others are really trying to change for all college athletes and the NCAA is trying their hardest to keep the propaganda going and skew the conversation towards greedy, spoiled kids just wanting more money. But to the players’ credit, it really looks like the proper steps are being taken, they already have an alliance and the backing of United Steelworkers president, Leo Gerard, who calls the whole idea of a “free education” a myth, especially for players who get hurt and get their scholarships snatched. Protection and obtaining true value of the scholarship is the theme, not money and memorabilia sales. And at the rate things are changing, it won’t be long til changes’ll be made in that area too. For an industry that has had its foot on the neck of its prime resource for so long, we can expect some friction, but right now the NCAA is acting like an embarrassed parent that’s been corrected by their child in line at a grocery store. And the confusion of the basis of the debate shouldn’t be, this is a group of rich guys stalling for time because they see the sandstorm coming from the distance. Guaranteed four year scholarships, medical responsibility, the big conferences wanna be by themselves, that’s a lot of golf trips and bonuses that won’t be enjoyed and apparently that’s much more important than holding schools to their word when it comes to the future of their students.

ALL THAT GLISENS AIN’T GOLD

BEFORE THE SEASON BEGAN NBA.COM SURVEYED THE LEAGUE’S GENERAL MANAGERS.  ON THIS ANNONOUMS SURVEY IT POSED THE QUESTION TO GENERAL MANAGERS.  WHICH CURRENT NBA PLAYER WOUD YOU START A FRANCHISE WITH? THREE PLAYERS STOOD OUT IN THE POLL.  KEVIN DURANT, LEBRON JAMES, AND KYRIE IRVING.  THERE IS NO SURPRISE ABOUT KD OR JAMES, BUT I WAS A BIT SURPRISED TO HEAR THE NAME KYRIE IRVING OVER, STEPH CURRY, PAUL GEORGE, OR CHIRS PAUL.  I HAVE OFTEN CRITIZED IRVING BECAUSE OF HIS HEALTH ISSUES, BUT HIS TALENT, AND ABILITES ARE ALL WORLD, BUT FOR ALL THAT POTENTIAL.   LET ME BE THE FIRST TO SAY ALL THAT GLISTENS AIN’T GOLD.
I HAVE ADVICE FOR THE CITY OF CLEVELAND….BUCKLE UP, MORE DRAMA IS HEADED YOUR WAY.  KRYIE IRVING’S CONTRACT WILL BE UP NEXT SEASON,  BUT IF WATHCED HIS BEHAVIOR AND BODY LANGUAGE LAST NIGHT ON TNT DURING CAVS AND THE KNICKS GAME, YOU ARE SMART ENOUGH TO REALIZE THAT HIS BODY LANGUAGE SAYS HIS CONTRACT IS UP THIS SUMMER.  KYRIE HAS PUBLICY SAID THAT HE IS IN CLEVELAND, AND HE IS PRETTY SURE HE WILL STAY, BUT I FOR BELIEVE HE WANTS OUT, AND PRIVATELY HE HAS BEEN RUMORED TO ECHO THE SAME.
IRVING WILL BE A RESTRICTED FREE AGENT AFTER NEXT SEASON, BUT THE CAVS CAN OFFER HIM A NEW DEAL THIS SUMMER IN JULY.  THE CONTRACT WILL MORE THAN LIKELY BE A MAX CONTRACT, IF HE DECLINES THAT MEANS ITS DRAMA ALL OVER AGAIN.  I HAVE VERY LITTLE SYMPATHY FOR DAN GILBERT THE OWNER OF THE CAVS, BUT IF KYRIE WANTS TO BE FREE THIS IS HIS MOMENT, BECAUSE THE MAX CONTRACT COULD CONTAIN HIM IN CLEVELAND FOR THE NEXT 6 YEARS.
THAT BEING SAID, IRVING’S STATS ARE DOWN THIS YEAR, AND IF YOU WATCHED HIM PASS UP TEAM MATE AFTER TEAM MATE LAST NIGHT TRYING TO SCORE AS IF THE OFFENSE WAS HIM ALONE, AND DURING TIME-OUTS, HIS HEAD COACH, MIKE BROWN, LOOKED LIKE HE WAS TALKING TO BRICK WALL, CLEARLY INDICATES THAT THERE ARE ISSUES HERE WITH MANAGEMENT AND COACHING STAFF.  KYRIE DOES NOT GET ALONG WITH DION WAITERS, AND CLEARLY DOES NOT WANT TO WAIT ON CAVS 1ST ROUND PICK ANHTONY BENNETT TO DELVOP.   HE VIEWS THE CAVS LUEL DENG TRADE AS A BAND-AID NOT A SOLUTION TO THE TEAM ROSTER.
THE NUMBER THAT STICKS OUT TO ME IS 16-30, THERE IS TOO MUCH TALENT ON THAT TEAM FOR THAT.  KYRIE IS ONLY 21 YEARS OLD, AND STILL HAS SOME GROWING TO DO, HE LACKS SOME MATURITY, AND UNDERSTANDING.  BUT UNFORTUANTLEY…THE CITY OF CLEVELAND COULD YET PROVE TO BE THE LAND WHERE NBA STARS LEAVE AND BECOME CHAMPIONS SOMEWHERE ELSE.
I FEEL FOR YOU MIKE BROWN, AND CAVS FANS, BUT ALL THAT GLISENS AIN’T GOLD.
