Illinois quick hits: Ogle County deputies shot; elder abuse awareness

Ogle County deputies shot

Three Ogle County sheriff’s deputies are recovering after being shot at a home in Dixon on Wednesday during a standoff. The incident began after the suspect’s mother notified the authorities her adult son was reportedly threatening homicide and suicide at their home in Dixon. Immediately, when authorities went inside the home, they were struck by gunfire and injured. The suspect was also shot and taken to a nearby hospital.

Lawsuit challenges substance in food

A lawsuit against Conagra Brands claims that some of the fish products are not what they seem to be. The Chicago-based company is accused of misleading customers into believing two of its products are 100% whole fish. The lawsuit says the products are actually pumped with an industrial filler that is also used in manufactured items such as paint and rubber that increases the weight of the fish.

Elder abuse awareness

Ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, the Illinois Department on Aging is reminding Illinoisans of when and how to report suspected cases of abuse. Elder abuse is characterized as an act causing any physical, mental or sexual injury to an older adult, including exploitation of their financial resources and abandonment. Illinois’ Adult Protective Services program investigates reports of abuse and mistreatment. Anyone can report abuse of an older adult or person with a disability who lives in the community by calling Illinois’ 24-hour APS hotline.
