Scholarship Fund Seeks Contributions
Contributions are being sought by the Marcella Guthrie Scholarship Fund to offset the cancellation of the fund’s 27th annual fundraiser.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Banquet (usually held the Friday before the national King King Day observance) was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Cancelling the fundraiser was “a tough decision,” said Larry Harmon, chairman of the board of directors of the scholarship fund.
“But so many other organizations have had to do that.”
The fund has provided scholarships to more than 300 graduating high school students stipends totaling more than $250,000.
Scholarship recipients are students from varied metropolitan Oklahoma City school districts.
Applicants must go through an interview process and complete an application form to be considered.
Past recipients have been academic leaders and community leaders, and some recipients have gone on to become successful teachers, news reporters and in other career choices, a statement said.
Board members of the board of directors of the non-profit scholarship fund are:
