Eight Get Scholarships

Eight Oklahoma City metropolitan area university students were recently awarded scholarships by the Oklahoma City/Norman chapter of the University of Oklahoma Black Alumni Society.

A new first-year scholarship was awarded to Joseph Onema, a 2020 Harding Charter Preparatory High School graduate, who received the 10th Dr. LaMona Evans Groce Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship of $2,000.

Seven continuing Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Scholarships were awarded to these prior-year scholarship recipients (and their scholarship amounts): 

  • Tierra Roundtree, a fifth-year university student and a graduate of John Marshall High School ($1,000), and will graduate in December with a bachelor of arts degree in  international security and Japanese;  
  • Dominique Equarte, a fourth-year university student, and a graduate of Douglass High School ($2,000); 
  • Esther McMillan, a fourth-year university student and aa graduate of Harding Fine Arts Center ($2,000); 
  • Dy’mond Combs, a fourth-year university student and a graduate of Santa Fe High School of Edmond ($2,000); 
  • Rebekah Pope, a third-year university student and a graduate of  Mustang High School($2,000);  
  • Ka’Tani Gouch, a second-year university student and a graduate of Moore High School ($2,000); and
  • Lauren Roberts, a second-year university student and a graduate of Classen School of Advanced Studies ($2,000). 
  • Miss Roberts, Miss Gouch, Miss Pope, Miss Roundtree, Miss Combs, Miss Equarte and Miss McMillan are all members of the prestigious Henderson Scholars Program at the university.

Each scholarship is 50 percent cash and 50 percent tuition waivers. 

Since 1997, the chapter has awarded 192 scholarships to students totaling $335,000 in cash, and tuition-waivers from the University of Oklahoma Alumni Association and Diversity Enrichment Programs.

 Officers of the board of governors of the chapter are   Ken Lawson (president), Annette Johnson Bly (vice president), Nicole Johnson (secretary) and Sondra Akins (treasurer).

Members are Oscar Jackson, Richard Cudjo,  Glenn Brooks, Tony Daniels, Charles Henry, Dr. Dorscine Spigner-Littles and Michael Tisdale.
