Cleveland County residents are confused by the odd smell in the air.

A strange smell took over the metro when many people walked out of their homes to a strange stench. Authorities across Cleveland County spend much of the day searching for the source of the smell.

The city still doesn’t know where the smell came from but they aren’t giving up. Currently, it doesn’t smell but several people told KOCO 5 that the smell was awful.

“It was a very curious smell. It wasn’t alarming or threatening by any means,” said Jerry Lawson, who smelled the odor.

Lawson said he smelled a strange odor.

“Smelled very unique and like original. It was not something I would really be able to describe but it wasn’t good,” Lawson said.

He wasn’t the only one in the city inundated with calls.

“When we first got the calls, it was really the north Norman area that they appeared to be coming from, then it kind of branched out and we were getting them from various areas in the community,” said Tiffany Vrska, Chief Communication Officer in the city of Norman.

So, the city investigated.

“We were trying to figure out what it was. We had boots on the ground trying to investigate and go to all these areas where we had gotten calls and answers from,” Vrska said.

They checked the sewer lines and sewage lift stations.

“There were really no findings and so we continue to search exhausting all avenues,” Vrska said.

The city said the smell lasted for about an hour, they think. They still don’t know where it came from but said they will continue to investigate if they hear any more concerns.
