Trump Safe After Shooting Incident at Campaign Event

Former President Donald Trump is safe following a shooting incident at a campaign event, according to the Secret Service. Trump is currently being evaluated at a local hospital.

The Butler County District Attorney confirmed to CBS Pittsburgh station KDKA that the incident resulted in two fatalities: the gunman and an audience member.

During the event, numerous shots were heard, prompting Secret Service agents to rush the stage. CBS News video footage shows Trump touching his ear and crouching to the ground, with some blood visible on his face.

Trump was quickly escorted away in a motorcade and raised his fist as he entered the SUV.

“Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe,” said Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. “This is now an active Secret Service investigation, and further information will be released when available.”

The Trump campaign issued a statement saying, “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”

Two law enforcement sources told CBS News that there is no longer a threat. The suspect is believed to be either dead or in custody, but details remain unclear. Secret Service agents did engage the suspect during the incident.
