Sixth grader killed in Iowa school shooting

(The Center Square) – A sixth-grade student was shot to death and five others were injured in a shooting at Iowa’s Perry High School on Thursday morning.

The alleged shooter, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of criminal investigation for the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Mortvedt did not say if Butler, who was a student at the school, died from his wounds. The Associated Press reported a source said the shooter died from his wounds.

Butler made several social media posts at the time of the shooting. Mortvedt did not specify what the posts contained and said they were part of the ongoing investigation.

Of the remaining five victims, four are students and one is a school administrator, Mortvedt said. One is in critical condition, but it is not life-threatening. The other four are stable, he said.

Mortvedt would confirm reports that the administrator injured is Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger.

The incident happened at the high school. The sixth-grader may have been in the building to participate in a school breakfast program there, Mortvedt said.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said the full resources of the state government would be available to assist in the response and recovery.

“The mental health region has social workers that are embedded in the school district and will provide counseling services for the students, the families and the staff,” Reynolds said at the news conference.”
