Pennington announces campaign to run for OKC City Council, Ward 7

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – July 29, 2024 – Camal Pennington is proud to announce the kickoff of his campaign for Oklahoma City, Ward 7. The community is invited to a campaign kickoff event on August 6 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the Garden Oaks Community Center.

Camal Pennington is a leader who understands the pulse of his community, has the experience to effect real change, and is dedicated to building Ward 7 together as a community. If elected, Pennington plans to address:

  • Safer streets and neighborhoods to ensure public safety for all.
  • Empower and uplift families in our community so that everyone, from children to seniors,has what they need to thrive.
  • Foster economic development, jobs, and investment in infrastructure.
  • Address the need for affordable housing and increase home ownership.

Pennington’s deep roots in Northeast Oklahoma City and his unwavering commitment to Ward 7 make him a powerful advocate for our community. He is a native son of Northeast Oklahoma City, attending Longfellow Elementary and Northeast Academy for Health Sciences and Engineering, experiences which shaped his values and embody the spirit of Ward 7.A proud graduate of Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma College of Law, Pennington has dedicated his life to serving others. His professional journey has taken him from the halls of Congress, where he fought for education, civil rights, and criminal justice reform, to advocating for teachers’ rights as an attorney for the Oklahoma City American Federation of Teachers.Currently, Penninigton serves as the Executive Director of It’s My Community Initiative (IMCI), where he leads efforts to empower families and strengthen our neighborhoods in Oklahoma City.

Before his work at IMCI, he played pivotal roles in higher education as Director of Annual Giving and then Director of Admissions at the University of Oklahoma College of Law. Additionally, he currently chairs the Oklahoma City Planning Commission as the Ward 7 representative, ensuring our city grows with integrity and inclusivity, and he also serves as the president of the Harding Fine Arts Academy School Board and as a Northeast Oklahoma City Renaissance board member.

A devoted husband to Torie Luster Pennington, President of the Oklahoma City American Federation of Teachers, Camal is also a loving father to their daughters, Olivia and Ella.
