(The Center Square) – Seattle Public Schools will officially appoint and publicly reveal its next superintendent on Nov. 5, following deliberations by the board of directors regarding two finalists.
Earlier this month, the Board of Directors for Seattle Public Schools narrowed its candidate pool to two finalists: “Candidate Seven” and “Candidate Eight.” The candidates’ identities have remained confidential throughout the process because they currently hold leadership positions in other school districts.
Candidate Seven received unanimous school board approval and was selected for appointment as the next permanent superintendent of Washington’s largest school district.
Several board members praised the candidate’s financial and operation expertise, with some suggesting that the person has held many leadership roles in public school districts.
Board members prioritized qualities highlighted in a recent survey: 62% of respondents want the next superintendent to focus on preparing students for the next grade and ultimately college, while 55% of respondents emphasize student and employee safety.
The desired traits of the next superintendent include student focus, financial expertise, extensive experience and accountability. Board members cited these when evaluating candidates. Ultimately, Candidate Seven fit the billing.
“My preference for Candidate Seven is – based off of some of the leadership profile qualities that we’re looking for. I think on the equity-driven and student focus, there was this real strong student-first mentality,” School Board President Gina Topp said during a board meeting on Wednesday. “I think Candidate Seven brings a very authentic and clear way to communicate that will help rebuild trust by being transparent.”
The school district has been searching for its next superintendent since Brent Jones announced in March that he was stepping down from the position. Jones, who served as superintendent for three years, earned $348,395 under his final contract with Seattle Public Schools.
Fred Podesta has been serving as the interim superintendent of Seattle Public Schools since Sept. 4, with the school board approving a salary of $320,355 for him.
Candidate Seven will be the fourth superintendent for Seattle Public Schools since 2014.
