Hollywood Live: Tupac Shakur murder case might finally be solved

Las Vegas police confirmed that they have served a search warrant in connection with the 27-year unsolved murder of Tupac Shakur, propelling the case back into the spotlight.

Shakur was one of the most prolific figures in hip-hop of all time. When he was gunned down the night of September 7, 1996, in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, he was only 25 years old. No arrests have ever been made. But the case, which has seen its share of conspiracy theories, has endured for decades.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that the search was conducted in the nearby city of Henderson, but the agency did not say whether a suspect had been identified. It’s also unclear what they were looking for and where they were actually looking. But here’s the good news: Nevada does not have a time limit for prosecuting homicide cases.

A home searched by Las Vegas police is seen on Thursday, July 20, 2023, in neighboring Henderson, Nev. The property was searched Monday, July 17, in connection with the 1996 drive-by shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas. (AP Photo/Ty ONeil)

As you recall, Shakur was shot while sitting inside a black BMW with Marion “Suge” Knight, head of Death Row Records. Police have said the two were waiting at a red light near the Las Vegas strip when a white Cadillac pulled up next to them and gunfire erupted. He was shot multiple times, rushed to the hospital, and Tupac died six days later. The Las Vegas police have said in the past that the investigation quickly stalled, in part because witnesses refused to cooperate.

I don’t know if that has changed now, but all I can say, in the words of Lizzo, it’s about damn time.

Well, just so you know, you can see me in “Dear Mama,” which is the latest Tupac documentary series. It’s airing on Hulu and they’re doing pretty well with it. Just got an Emmy nomination.
