A Records Expo Is Set By League

The third annual Records Expungement Expo will be held by the Community Convening and Social Justice Department of the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, at the Metro Technology Center, 1900 Springlake Dr.

The event will help those in Oklahoma County with arrests, charges and convictions to get their records expunged,” according to Jabar Shumate, vice president of social justice of the Urban League.

Individuals who previously received deferred sentences can have their records sealed only if they meet certain conditions set by the court following sentencing, Mr. Shumate explained.

“People who are acquitted, have completed their sentence, or had their cases dismissed before trial are also eligible for the expungement process,” he said.

“Clients are encouraged to check the Urban League’s Website to confirm their qualifications for the program.”

To participate, all outstanding legal fees related to the charge must be paid, and, if eligible, the Urban League will cover court costs, Mr. Shumate pointed out.

“Realizing that over 94 percent of expungement eligible records remain unsealed in Oklahoma and that African-Americans and other minorities represent the largest decided to help amount of those with unsealed records, the Urban League decided to help,” Mr. Shumate commented.

“Expungement can help those with arrests or convictions pass background checks and secure stable housing and employment.”

In addition to local and county legal organizations that provide services will be in attendance at the exposition.

Other organizations (TEEM, the Diversion Hub and other organizations) will have representatives at the exposition.

The Urban League will also assist clients with accessing their OSBI report at the Expungement Expo.
