OKLAHOMA CITY —Andre Coleman is once again on the Millwood Public Schools board – this time serving District 5, after Tuesday’s election.
Coleman, 52, had previously served on the board representing District 2 until he stepped down in 2022 amid questions regarding his residency in the district.
Coleman ran for the District 5 seat earlier this year, but was defeated by longtime incumbent Marvin Provo, 84, who had held the seat since the 1990s. However, soon after winning the April election, Provo stepped down for health reasons, leaving the seat open. The board took no action to fill the seat, triggering Tuesday’s special election once the seat was left vacant for 60 days.
On Tuesday, Coleman secured the District 5 seat with the support of 51.22% of voters with 164 votes cast, defeating challengers Cartelyou Edwards Sr., who received 32.93% of the vote, and Chimere Grant, who received 15.85%.
District 5 is the smallest in the district in Millwood Public Schools, representing an area bound to the south by Northeast 50th Street, to the west by North Kelley Avenue, to the north by NE 55th Street to the east just shy of Martin Luther King Avenue.
Coleman issued a statement thanking voters for their support.
“I look forward to working with the established board members, along with the superintendent,” Coleman said. “I believe a great foundation allows for a sturdy home.”
Coleman said he would particularly like to address needs early childhood to second grade, “meeting about the food our babies and students are eating. I am a chef, so healthy palatable food is something I do know about.”
Coleman currently serves as a culinary instructor for Metro Technology Center and as an insurance agent.
