Zamari R. Waldrup, a student at Douglass High School, will be awarded an E. M. “Nat” Watson Jr. Athletic Scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded at the Oklahoma African-American Educators Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
The ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr.
At Douglas High, Mr. Waldrup was captain and offensive lineman of the varsity football team, and was a member of the wrestling team.
He was involved with the Family Awareness and Community Teamwork Police Youth Leadership Program, and represented Douglass High as a member of the Oklahoma City Public Schools Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board.
Mr. Waldrup was a member of the Student Council at Douglass High.
Additionally, he served as a mentor for Poetry & Chill, and was a four-year percussionist for the Douglass Marching Band.
In 2022-2023, he was named All-City Academic Conference Offensive Lineman, and won a first place award as a member of the All-City Wrestling Team.
The athletic scholarship recipient received an Outstanding Community Volunteerism Award from the South Park Estates Neighborhood Association.
In his letter of recommendation of Mr. Waldrup for the scholarship, Douglass High Head Football Coach Derrick Adams described Mr. Waldrup as “respectable, responsible, reliable and adaptable.”
“He demonstrated leadership in school and in the community,” the coach wrote.
The scholarship recipient plans to attend Langston University in the fall, and said he will major in education and counseling, and minor in business management.
Eventually, he plans to own a counseling agency for young adults and youth.
Also, the athletic scholarship recipient said he will play football at Langston.
He is the grandson of David Ealy of Oklahoma City.
