Illinois quick hits: Hospitals team with state over pathogens; betting fee starting soon

Hospitals team with state for pathogen treatment

The State of Illinois has teamed up with two Chicago hospitals to serve as treatment centers for “high-consequence pathogens.” Under two agreements with the Illinois Department of Public Health, Rush University Medical Center and Lurie Children’s Hospital will upgrade their capacity to treat people suffering from high-consequence pathogens. The term refers to highly infectious diseases that pose a threat to public safety, such as the Ebola virus and pneumonic plague. Under the agreement, Rush will receive $900,000 in state funding and Lurie Children’s will receive $600,000.

Betting fee starting soon

FanDuel customers in Illinois will soon see a new fee added to each bet they place. Flutter Entertainment, FanDuel’s parent company, announced that beginning Sept. 1, it will be charging $0.50 per wager. The move comes in response to the new Illinois Transaction Fee, which takes effect July 1. Flutter CEO Peter Jackson criticized the transaction fee, saying it will push customers toward unregulated operators resulting in less state revenue.
