Primary election petitions circulating
Tuesday is the first day to circulate nominating petitions for established party candidates in Illinois.
Republicans and Democrats can start collecting signatures to get on the March 2026 primary ballot.
Races up for grabs include statehouse seats and Illinois’ statewide offices like governor and U.S. senator.
Filing week begins Oct. 27.
Aquifer protection bill signed
After Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 1723 last Friday, carbon sequestration will be banned at or under the Mahomet Aquifer.
The law taking effect Jan. 1 also creates a commission to study the effects of carbon sequestration in collaboration with the University of Illinois.
The Mahomet Aquifer provides drinking water for at least 14 Illinois counties in Central Illinois.
Cook County abortion fund to be announced
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle plans to announce a $2 million taxpayer-funded grant to the Chicago Abortion Fund Tuesday afternoon.
According to Preckwinkle’s office, the grant will expand access to community-based reproductive health and wraparound services.
The Cook County Health Board of Directors and county commissioners are scheduled to vote on the grant later this month.
