Poll: Most Floridians are against identity politics in medicine, at large

(The Center Square) – A new survey reveals that a majority of Florida’s doctors and residents support protecting women and children from transgender ideology, while most also oppose the idea that patients are better cared for by a doctor of their own race.

Do No Harm’s director of the Center for Accountability in Medicine Dr. Ian Kingsbury told The Center Square: “Our survey indicates that the general public and physicians are aligned: medicine should not be politicized, and educational opportunities should be earned, not given.”

The Center for Accountability in Medicine (CAM) is a project of medical group Do No Harm that “empowers policy solutions grounded in evidence and equal opportunity” rather than ideology while promoting “excellence, transparency, and integrity in healthcare,” according to its website.

Kingsbury said that “while medical organizations peddle divisive ideologies and political activism, the average doctor simply wants to deliver high-quality care to patients.”

“In today’s sorry state of healthcare, minors are subjected to irreversible sex-change procedures, physicians are pressured to make race-based decisions about their patients, and medical schools discriminate in admissions,” Kingsbury said.

“It’s no wonder people don’t trust the medical establishment,” Kingsbury stated.

“To restore integrity in medicine, organizations must reject the advances of woke activists, prioritize evidence-based practices, and heed physicians who remain committed to their oath to ‘do no harm,’” Kingsbury said.

CAM’s survey results entitled “What Rank-and-File Physicians Think About DEI and Pediatric ‘Gender-Affirming Care’: Evidence from Florida” reveal many interesting facts related to sentiments on identity politics, especially as it pertains to the medical field.

For instance, 66% of doctors and 60% of the public strongly or somewhat support Florida’s new law “that prohibits medical professionals from providing sex change interventions, such as puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgery, to individuals under 18.”

Even higher percentages of those surveyed strongly or somewhat support requiring transgender athletes to “compete on teams that match the sex they were assigned at birth,” with 75% of doctors and 76% of the public saying such.

Additionally, at 65% most doctors agreed that “social media use among children and adolescents has played a role in the increase in the diagnosis of gender dysphoria” and 64% of these same doctors are concerned at the rise in children with gender dysphoria.

Sixty-nine percent of doctors and 78% of the public surveyed appear to reject the idea of racial concordance, as they do not believe that patients “have better health outcomes” when they are treated by doctors of the same racial or ethnic background as them.

Most of those surveyed also believe that applicants for a college or university should be admitted “solely on the basis of merit, even if that results in few minority students being admitted,” with 68% of doctors and 59% of the public saying so.

The survey stated that Florida was chosen to be polled because “Florida often reflects and forecasts national partisan dynamics.”

“Random sample surveys of Florida voters can serve as strong bellwethers for national sentiment due to the state’s demographic, political, and geographic diversity,” the survey said.

The survey concluded that “a profound misalignment” exists “between rank-and-file doctors and the progressive stances of major medical organizations on DEI and gender issues.”

“Moving forward, policymakers should heed these grassroots insights: expand bans on pediatric interventions, enforce colorblind admissions post-Students for Fair Admissions, and reform medical organizations to amplify intellectually diverse voices,” the survey advised.
