Pennsylvania wildfires coming under control

(The Center Square) – Two wildfires burning through Michaux State Forest have been significantly controlled, according to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Secretary Cindy Dunn said Tuesday that the Thompson Hollow Fire, which has consumed 2,248 acres, is 42% contained. The smaller Hammonds Rocks Fire, at just 470 acres, is 92% contained.

“Crews are working hard to secure the perimeter of the fires so they are staying within their current footprints,” Dunn said. “Although there is a lot of smoke from the interior of the fires visible for distances, we are making progress thanks to some hard work by our wildland firefighters, county and local responders, and volunteers.”

The 85,000-acre state forest spans Adams, Cumberland and Franklin counties in the south-central region of the commonwealth. Windy conditions helped ignite the blaze six days prior and at least 108 personnel are working to put out the fires and clear main roads.

No one has been injured and no structures have been destroyed.
