Illinois quick hits: Bears property tax deal coming together; Thanksgiving food safety urged

Bears property tax deal coming together

The Chicago Bears have tentatively reached an agreement with Arlington Heights over the property taxes for the former Arlington Park racetrack. The exact details of the deal were not released, and any deal would still need approval from the Arlington Heights Village Board and three local school boards. The team has failed to land its requested public funding for a new, $4.7 billion stadium just south of Soldier Field.

Testimony continues in Madigan trial

Prosecutors are focusing on real estate developments in Chicago’s 25th Ward at the corruption trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and codefendant Michael McClain. Former Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis resumed his direct testimony Tuesday morning at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago after undercover video of Madigan was shown to jurors.

Thanksgiving food safety urged

The Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding Illinoisans to celebrate the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday safely by taking precautions to protect everyone from foodborne illnesses. Hosts can protect their guests by following basic food safety steps, including keeping hot foods hot, cold foods cold, and properly thawing frozen turkeys before roasting them. Food safety experts recommend thawing turkeys in the refrigerator. It takes about 24 hours for every five pounds of turkey to thaw in the refrigerator, so it can take three days to thaw a 15-pound bird.
