Illinois quick hits: Biden to visit Illinois; attorneys for the indigent get raise

Biden to visit Illinois

President Joe Biden will be returning to Illinois Nov. 9 to tout his White House agenda.

Members of the Illinois congressional delegation have been notified that the president will visit the Chicago area, but no other details were available. It is likely Biden will attend a fundraising event during the visit.

The president was last in Illinois June 28 to deliver a speech on “Bidenomics.”

Attorneys for the indigent get raise

The Illinois Supreme Court has announced amendments to Supreme Court Rule 299 regarding compensation for attorneys appointed to represent indigent parties.

The rule doubles compensation for an attorney appointed by a court to represent an indigent party to $150 per hour, up from $75 per hour, and $150 per hour for time reasonably expended out of court, up from $50 per hour. It also raises the maximum compensation amount for representation of an indigent defendant to $10,000, from its previous maximum of $5,000.

I-80 projects planned

The Illinois Department of Transportation is marking several milestones on the $1.3 billion overhaul of Interstate 80.

Entering next construction season, an estimated $385 million worth of projects on I-80’s mainline lanes will be underway on almost 12 miles of the corridor, signaling the start of a major new phase.

The reconstruction of I-80 is replacing more than 50-year-old infrastructure, improving safety, adding capacity and building new connections across the interstate, officials say.
