Illinois quick hits: Chicago mayor expected to propose property tax hikes

Johnson expected to propose property tax hikes

During his campaign to become the mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson repeatedly vowed that he would not raise property taxes in the city.

Now that Chicago is facing a budget deficit of nearly $1 billion for 2025, it appears Johnson will be going back on his promise when he delivers his budget address this week.

According to several reports, Johnson will propose a property tax increase when he presents his 2025 budget plan Wednesday.

Springfield police are looking for a man who escaped arrest Monday.

Police said Deandre Perkins was arrested earlier in the day on several out-of-state warrants. Perkins then asked for medical attention after he said he was having an asthma attack. Once he was treated and released from Springfield Memorial Hospital, police said Perkins was able to escape and fled the scene.

Several law enforcement agencies have been canvassing the area.

Nearly 5,000 state flag entries

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office announced the Illinois Flag Commission received nearly 5,000 entries during the six-week submission period that closed Oct. 18.

Now that the submission period is closed, the Illinois Flag Commission will meet before the end of the year to select the top 10 designs.

Beginning in January, the public will have the opportunity to vote online for one of 10 new designs, or one of the three former flag designs, including the current state flag.
