Illinois quick hits: Chicago police officer killed; controversy over East St. Louis shooting; Flash Index falls

Chicago police officer killed in shooting

A Chicago Police officer died after being shot in the line of duty on the city’s South Side. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said officers attempted to stop a subject they believed to be armed Thursday night. When the subject fled into an apartment, a second person with a rifle exchanged gunfire with police. Snelling said the 34-year-old officer was transported to the hospital after being struck but later succumbed to her injuries.

Controversy follows East St. Louis shooting

An official from an East St. Louis school that works to reduce violence is lashing out after a St. Clair County judge decided to release two suspects in a firearms case from custody. Charges were filed after police responded to a reported shooting outside the Teens Against Killing Everywhere center May 28. Executive Director Vickie Kimmel told the Belleville News Democrat that if the incident would have happened in a nearby “white” community, the suspects would be locked up and they would have thrown away the key.

The University of Illinois Flash Index fell in May from 102.4 to 102. Any reading above 100 indicates continued economic growth. The major Illinois tax revenues were down in May compared to the same month last year after adjusting for inflation. Both the individual income and corporate taxes were considerably lower.
