Illinois quick hits: Cold impacts rail commute; new home listings in Peoria

Cold impacts rail commute

A blast of cold air will stick around for another day in Illinois. Temperatures will be nearly 20 degrees below average Tuesday in many parts of the state.

Frozen switches resulted in massive delays for commuters in the Chicago area. Metra reported delays by up to 55 minutes for some trains because of switch problems. Temperatures are expected to warm up as the week progresses.

New home listings in Peoria

While the nation is still in the grips of a housing shortage, one Central Illinois city is being highlighted for having more new listings go up for sale than others.

Realtor.com identified 10 places where builders are putting up more homes, homeowners are finally listing their residences, and home buyers have more choices. Peoria was ranked as the number one city in the country for available housing with 460 new listings in October, a nearly 14% increase from the month before.

Covered bridge damaged

The future is uncertain for a wooden covered bridge near Princeton that was severely damaged by a truck. The bridge, built in 1863, is one of the five remaining covered bridges in Illinois.

On Nov. 16, despite multiple signs warning against doing so, the driver of an 18-wheeler tried to cross the bridge, causing extensive damage. The company that owned the truck released a statement that said they terminated the driver responsible for the accident.
