Illinois quick hits: Deliberations continue at Madigan trial; Carp project delayed

Deliberations continue at Madigan trial

Jury deliberations are in their tenth day at the bribery and racketeering trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan in Chicago.

Judge John Robert Blakey said Monday he has no idea how long the jury will deliberate. Madigan has pleaded not guilty to 23 corruption-related counts.

The Chicago Tribune reports a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Tuesday was scrapped. State officials said the move follows the Trump administration’s actions of withholding federal funding for the former president’s infrastructure law.

Discrimination lawsuit filed

A former University of Illinois Chicago professor is suing his former employer alleging the university fired him after he objected to what he describes as its racially discriminatory hiring practices.

The Liberty Justice Center filed the lawsuit Monday on behalf of Stephen Kleinschmit, who was a clinical associate professor in the university’s Department of Public Policy, Management, and Analytics.
