Illinois Quick Hits: Dems, GOP demand ethics reform from Welch

(The Center Square) – State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid, D-Bridgeview, issued a statement calling for legislation he introduced to bring further ethics reform to Springfield following the unanimous vote by the Legislative Ethics Commission to release an investigation report into former Rep. Harry Benton, who was accused of sexual harassment.

Rashid’s House Bill 3562 would bring the Legislative Inspector General’s authority in releasing publicly details of an investigation without the approval of lawmakers or a significant delay.

House Minority Leader Tony McCombie and House GOP members have continued to call for Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch to consider similar ethics reform proposals introduced by Republican members, while questioning if Welch followed ethics rules already in place.

WEST ANNOUNCES ROCKFORD MAYORAL RUN

Less than 24 hours after Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara announced he would resign from his decade-long held role, state Rep. Maurice West, D-Rockford, announced he would run to lead the city.

If West were to win a special election for the position, local Democrat party leadership would likely select his replacement for the district’s seat.

The representative hasn’t said if he’d suspend his reelection campaign for the House, which he is running unopposed. A date for a special election hasn’t been announced yet.

AI FILING ERRORS

A recent study has found a sharp increase in legal filing errors related to artificial intelligence. According to analysis by Laine AI, Illinois had no recorded incidents in 2023 or 2024 but jumped to fifth in the nation with 33 cases in 2025.

The study analyzed 724 confirmed AI-related filing errors from a court-record dataset, tracking hallucinations, fabricated citations and other AI-generated mistakes in legal proceedings.
