Illinois quick hits: DeVore appeals in gun ban challenge; Chicago commute among the worst

Respiratory virus season

While more than half of the counties in Illinois remain at an elevated level for COVID-19 hospitalizations according to CDC data, the state’s overall respiratory illness level has decreased in recent weeks.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said while respiratory illness activity appears to have peaked and is now trending downward, it is important to remember that respiratory virus season can last into the spring and additional increases in illness rates are still possible.

DeVore appeals in gun ban challenge

Attorney Thomas DeVore says he’s already filed an appeal to an Effingham County judge denying his challenges to Illinois’ gun ban, asking it to be reinstated.

The cases were vacated last year after the Illinois Supreme Court sided with the state in a separate challenge from state Rep. Dan Caulkins. DeVore contends his cases are different than what Caulkins unsuccessfully brought to the state courts.

Chicago commute among the worst

A navigation software company recently released its annual traffic index for 2023, and Chicago is home to one of the worst commutes in the country.

TomTom reviewed 80 cities in the U.S. based on average travel times, congestion and the average speed during rush hour. New York City is ranked as the worst when it comes to traffic, while Chicago is 5th worst. The easiest commute belongs to Oklahoma City.
