Illinois quick hits: Disaster declaration signed; holiday weather could impact travel

Disaster declaration signed

President Joe Biden has approved Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s request and signed a disaster declaration allowing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to offer assistance for residents in Cook County who were impacted by severe weather in September.

On Sep. 17, severe storms passed through Cook County, producing heavy rainfall, flash flooding and nine inches of precipitation. This severe storm system caused substantial flooding, resulting in significant property damage with widespread power outages affecting homeowners and businesses.

Dog virus investigated

The respiratory illness is largely resistant to antibiotics and has led to some fatalities. The American Veterinary Medical Association said it is not clear what is causing the virus so far. Labs across the country have been sharing their findings as they try to pinpoint the culprit.

Holiday weather could impact travel

Although much of Illinois will enjoy ideal weather for Thanksgiving, the trip back home could be dicey for some.

Thursday’s forecast calls for sunshine and temperatures near 50 degrees for much of the state. A storm system is expected to affect Illinois Sunday with colder temperatures and snow showers that could affect driving conditions.
