Illinois quick hits: Fatal Chicago shootings; nasal swabbing at airports

Fatal Chicago shootings

Five people, including a 15-year-old girl, were fatally shot overnight in Chicago. The girl and a 24-year-old man were in a parked car when someone fired shots at them, killing them both.

Another attack occurred when a 30-year-old man was walking on a sidewalk when an assailant fired multiple shots. The man ran to a nearby yard and collapsed and died. No one is in custody in any of the attacks.

Nasal swabbing at airports

The country’s top health agency is expanding a program to include Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in testing of international travelers for infectious diseases.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asks arriving international passengers to volunteer to have their noses swabbed and answer questions about their travel. Eight airports are taking part in the program.

Officials said the locations should provide more information about respiratory infections coming out of Asia, Africa and South America.

Charging station funds announced

The Illinois Department of Transportation on Tuesday released the first official Notice of Funding Opportunity for round one of the Illinois National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which will provide up to $50 million for the construction of 46 charging stations across the state.

Officials said the program aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by providing access to charging on Illinois interstates and is part of a series of initiatives to achieve the state’s goal of becoming a leader in manufacturing and deploying electric vehicles.
