Former deputy appealing pre-trial detentionThe legal team representing a former Illinois sheriff’s deputy charged with fatally shooting an unarmed woman last month laid out its plans Monday to appeal a pre-trial detention order to the appellate court.Sean Grayson is charged with the murder of Sonya Massey after she called 911 to report a prowler. Since being arrested, Grayson has been held in jail, and a Sangamon County judge has rejected two attempts to get him released pending his full trial.More heat TuesdayThe hottest temperatures of the year will affect the Prairie State Tuesday.Excessive heat warnings have been issued for most of the state as temperatures will hover around 100 degrees in many areas, with heat indices approaching 110.A little relief ushers in Wednesday in some parts of Illinois, with temperatures topping out closer to 90.Tax credit for back-to-school expenses As the new school year gets underway, the Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding eligible taxpayers that they may claim back-to-school expenses for their K-12 students on their 2024 Illinois individual income tax returns. The Illinois Education Expense Credit allows parents or legal guardians of a full-time K-12 student under the age of 21 to take a 25% tax credit on qualified education expenses over $250 this year. The total credit may not exceed $750, regardless of the number of qualifying students.
