Illinois quick hits: Former deputy’s trial moved to Peoria; Pritzker signs memo with UK

Former deputy’s trial moved to Peoria

A Springfield judge has ruled that Sean Grayson’s first-degree murder trial can be moved to Peoria County.

Grayson and another Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a 911 call from Sonya Massey, who said she saw a prowler. Body camera footage shows Grayson shooting Massey after she moved a pot of boiling water.

Grayson’s legal team filed a motion to move the trial out of Sangamon County, arguing that local news coverage of Massey’s death would make it impossible to find an impartial jury. Grayson has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle announced early findings from the Promise Guaranteed Income pilot program.

Launched in 2022, the program used $42 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act and provided monthly payments of $500 to 3,250 households. A survey showed that 70% of recipients said the payments had a positive impact on their mental health.

Preckwinkle also announced the formation of an advisory committee to guide the county’s next phase of guaranteed income programming.
