Illinois quick hits: Grants for sharps disposal; lottery winner hasn’t come forward

Heavy rain expected

Strong storms moved across Illinois Wednesday, dropping heavy rains and spawning at least one tornado.

The community of Greenville, which is located between Metro East and Effingham, was hit by a possible tornado which left debris strewn across the area. Union County was hit hard with over 5,000 residents without power at one point.

Southern Illinois will now deal with several days of heavy rains. Flood watches have been issued for numerous counties.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency announced a funding opportunity that will provide grants to units of local government for the collection and disposal of household sharps from their residents.

Sharps, including needles, syringes and lancets, collected from private citizens are a household waste. Applicants may be eligible for funding of up to $35,000 to cover expenses incurred in collecting, storing and disposing of used sharps.

Lottery winner hasn’t come forward

It has been over a week since a single Mega Millions ticket sold in Illinois won the $349 million jackpot, but the winner has yet to come forward.

It is the fourth time in four years that an Illinois lottery player has won the Mega Millions jackpot. The winning ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store in Cortland for the March 25 drawing.
