Highland Park mass shooting trial starts Monday

The four dozen people who were shot during the Highland Park Fourth of July Parade will be able to attend the whole murder trial of the man charged in the attack. The judge also ruled that victims will be able to bring a support person with them.

Jury selection in the case starts on Monday, with the judge reminding Robert Crimo III that it will go on whether or not he’s there. Crimo has pleaded not guilty to murdering seven people and wounding dozens of others in the 2022 shooting.

State Police: Urban policing model works

Law enforcement officials say the Illinois State Police’s urban policing model is paying dividends.

The Public Safety Enforcement Group reports that their efforts have led to a six-year low in homicides in East St. Louis. Homicides reduced by 26% in 2024 compared to the year before, and non-fatal shootings decreased by 32%.

ISP said the expanded use of technology, such as Automated License Plate Reader cameras, have been instrumental in aiding criminal investigations.

Prosecutors: Highland woman sold counterfeit goods

An Illinois woman has admitted to selling counterfeit cosmetics, purses, clothing and accessories from high-end designer brands.

Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois said Emily Montegna of Highland infringed on registered trademarks by importing fake goods from overseas.

Montegna admitted running a business under multiple names in order to sell merchandise.
