Illinois Quick Hits: Illinois mayors announce resignation

(The Center Square) – Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara announced Monday that he will be stepping down from public office at the end of August to serve as a lobbyist.

McNamara will be the new CEO of the Illinois Municipal League, which represents 1,294 local governments at the Statehouse in Springfield. He’ll replace current CEO Brad Cole, who is set to retire.

Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, a Congressional hopeful, also announced his departure from city government Monday. Biss said he would resign in October, ahead of the midterm election in which he is running to represent Illinois’s 9th congressional district.

Both municipalities are expected to share more details about the process of replacing the officials soon.

NWS SURVEYING DAMAGE FROM MONDAY STORMS, LIKELY TORNADOES

The National Weather Service’s Chicago office announced early Tuesday it is beginning to assess storm damage from a spell of severe weather that struck Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana Monday.

Among preliminary reports, at least three tornadoes in the suburban Chicago area are believed to have touched down Monday afternoon, alongside significant wind and hail damage, according to the NWS.

Survey teams will be assessing damage across the area Tuesday, focusing on locations with especially significant damage.

SNAP ENROLLMENT DOWN 16% IN ILLINOIS A YEAR AFTER PROGRAM CHANGES

One year after President Donald Trump’s administration and Congress changed requirements for participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Illinois Department of Human Services reported enrollment numbers 16% lower year-over-year.

The June data revealed about 1.6 million Illinoisans were enrolled in the food benefits program, down from nearly 1.9 million in the previous year. The program had new work requirements imposed on different groups of enrollees in April and May.
