Illinois quick hits: Inmates from Stateville get ready to move to other prisons; State Department of Revenue to evaluate property tax system

Inmates from Stateville get ready to move to other prisons

Inmates at Illinois’ Stateville Correctional Center must be moved to other prisons around the state by the end of September following a federal judge’s order. The Chicago Tribune reports the judge sided with attorneys who said the living conditions at Stateville were too hazardous for those being held there. The Pritzker administration plans to demolish the prison, but plans haven’t been finalized.

State Department of Revenue to evaluate property tax system

Effective immediately, Senate Bill 3455 has the Illinois Department of Revenue and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to evaluate the property tax system in the state under a measure Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Friday. Republicans were critical of the measure, saying a similar task force in 2019 never advanced any substantive reforms. Illinois has among the highest property taxes in the country.

New laws on the books for Illinois drivers

Among the 270 laws Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker enacted Friday are measures impacting drivers. Beginning next year, the Illinois Secretary of State can start to issue mobile ID cards and driver’s licenses with House Bill 4592. Also beginning Jan. 1, 2025, the Illinois Secretary of State can offer an 8-year driver’s license. Drivers having to appear in court are granted more notice before a potential suspension for failure to appear with House Bill 277, effective Jan. 1, 2025.
