Illinois quick hits: Jersey County to vote on splitting from state; gym gives high school students summer pass

Jersey County to vote on splitting from state

Jersey County will be the 28th county to vote on splitting from Illinois. On May 14, the county board voted unanimously to put a non-binding question on their county general election ballot. So far, 26 and a half southern Illinois counties have voted on such questions, and all have voted in favor. County officials said a neighboring state, such as Kentucky, could accept the counties by moving the state line. This would also require Illinois’ permission, but Attorney General Kwame Raoul has already said that it would not happen.

Firefighters treated

Extreme hot temperatures led to two Danville firefighters being treated for heat exhaustion while fighting a house fire. The Danville Fire Department found a two-story, wooden framed house with smoke and flames coming out of the windows. No one was home at the time, but firefighters learned there was a pet inside. Firefighters rescued a dog and extinguished the flames. Two firefighters suffered heat related illness.
