Madigan seeks trial delay
Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is asking a judge to delay his corruption trial. Madigan and co-defendant Michael McClain on Tuesday asked a judge to stay proceedings in the case or reschedule the trial date for the fall of 2024, after the Supreme Court decides another case involving the federal bribery statute. The Madigan case is set for trial in April 2024. He faces 22 counts of racketeering, bribery and official misconduct as part of a federal indictment.
Accused shooter moved to maximum security
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has tightened security for the man accused of killing seven people during the 2022 Independence Day parade in Highland Park. Robert Crimo III was moved to maximum security after what the sheriff’s office said was a random search of his cell in November. Authorities said Crimo became upset during the search and verbally threatened a correctional officer.
No. 1 for cell phone taxes
A report shows Illinois is No. 1 in the nation for cell phone taxes by state. The Tax Foundation’s recent report shows the typical American household with a family share plan paying $100 per month paid nearly $294 per year in taxes, fees and government surcharges. Illinois continued with the highest wireless taxes in the country at 33.8%, followed by Arkansas at just over 32%.
