Mail distribution centers to be eliminated
Members from Illinois’ congressional delegation are making an attempt to keep mail processing centers open.
U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, along with Reps. Eric Sorenson, Mike Quigley and Nikki Budzinski, sent a letter to the Postmaster General urging him to reconsider his decision to eliminate the processing and distribution centers in Springfield, Peoria and Champaign and the Quad Cities.
The lawmakers asked for data on how eliminating the centers would improve delivery times.
Bank robber arrested
A northern Illinois bank robber was arrested while waiting for a bus near the crime scene.
Surveillance photos show a masked man robbing the Byline Bank Monday in Westchester. According to the criminal complaint, the teller handed over the money, which contained a tracking device. Police followed the tracking device to the suspect, who was waiting at a bus stop 500 feet from the bank.
Police said that the device was audibly beeping inside a backpack the suspect was holding.
Statue donated to Wilmington
The famous Route 66 statue known as the “Gemini Giant,” which has stood outside a restaurant in Wilmington since the 1960s, has been sold at auction.
Residents who were worried that the statue would be taken out of Wilmington managed to raise nearly $40,000 through a GoFundMe, but the winning bid of $275,000 for the 28-foot statue was placed by the Joliet Area Historical Museum.
The museum immediately donated the Gemini Giant to the City of Wilmington.
