Illinois quick hits: Metro unemployment down; commercial vehicle violations reported

Metro unemployment down

The unemployment rate decreased in all of Illinois’ 12 metropolitan areas for May from the same time last year, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The lowest unemployment rate goes to Bloomington, at 3.1%. Decatur had the highest at 5%.

The statewide average is 4.4%, higher than the national average of 4.2%.

Commercial vehicle violations reported

Out of nearly 3,000 commercial motor vehicles weighed over the span of three days this week, Illinois State Police announced 93 violations enforced, including overweight violations and out of service violations.

ISP said they were successful in checking for driver impairment and educating drivers on the importance of safe commercial motor vehicle operations.

School’s flag display

As Independence Day approaches, an Illinois high school has more than 3,000 U.S. flags on its front lawn.

Notre Dame College Prep in Niles has planted the flags each year since 2008 to honor those who gave their lives in service to the nation.

School officials call it “a moving show of gratitude from the next generation to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
