Illinois quick hits: Mexican nationals cast votes; intern screenings for Department of Juvenile Justice

Mexican nationals cast votes

Long lines stretched around the block outside the Mexican Consulate in Chicago Sunday, as more than 1,000 Mexican nationals came out to vote in the Mexican 2024 presidential election.

Voters who waited for hours said they were frustrated by the situation as election officials pleaded for patience. The election turned out to be historic as the country will have its first female president ever.

Chicago has the second-highest number of Mexican nationals registered to vote in the country.

Carnival shut down after fight

A large fight forced a carnival in northern Illinois to shut down due to safety concerns.

Posen police said a fight broke out Sunday night resulting in several arrests. As a result, authorities said they made the difficult decision to close the carnival for the safety of all attendees.

The incident was the second large-scale fight to be reported in Cook County in a matter of days.
