Illinois quick hits: More migrant buses expected; best high schools announced

More migrant buses expected

The Committee of Immigrant and Refugee Rights recently held a meeting to discuss the ongoing migrant crisis. City officials said 36 buses carrying migrants arrived in the past week and 15 more are expected over the weekend.

The committee heard from mutual-aid groups who report seeing children who have been cut by barbed wire, poorly stitched up in Texas and bused to Chicago with infected wounds. The mayor’s first deputy chief of staff said immediate funding is needed from the federal government.

RSV vaccine recommendations

The Illinois Department of Public Health has endorsed the recommendation by the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for the newly FDA-approved vaccine for RSV.

The vaccine can be administered during weeks 32 to 36 of pregnancy to protect babies from the virus. IDPH is urging Illinoisans to take advantage of the protection that is available from all three of the respiratory viruses that were responsible for last winter’s “tripledemic” of COVID-19, flu and RSV that they said caused a strain on resources in many hospitals.

Best high schools announced

A report ranks seven Illinois high schools among the top 50 in the country. Niche, a website connecting students and families with colleges, published its 2024 Best Schools rankings.

Walter Payton College Prep High School in Chicago was tops in Illinois and ranked fourth nationally. Northside College Prep School in Chicago placed second in the state and 8th in the U.S.

The Davidson Academy in Reno, Nevada was named the best public high school in the country.
