Illinois quick hits: More migrant buses; manufacturing employees strike

More migrant buses

Buses filled with migrants from the southern border continue to arrive in Illinois.

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications said seven more buses of migrants were expected to arrive in the city this week, following at least seven buses on Tuesday. City data shows that more than 15,000 migrants have been brought to Chicago since August of last year.

Manufacturing employees strike

Hundreds of workers at a pharmaceutical plant in Bradley have walked off the job. The contract for union workers at CSL Behring expired Wednesday night.

A large number of employees rallied outside the main entrance of the facility Thursday morning. Union officials have voiced concerns over the outsourcing of work to non-union members. CSL Behring is Kankakee County’s largest manufacturing facility.

Haunted house inspections

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Illinois Department of Labor are visiting and inspecting haunted houses to ensure they’re safe.

Haunted houses in Illinois are required to be inspected prior to operation, though haunted houses operated by not-for-profit religious, educational or charitable organizations can apply for an exemption from the inspections.

In addition to checking facilities for safety, including making sure exits are freely-accessible, state law requires a criminal background check and sex offender registry check for all amusement attraction workers, and a written substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
