Illinois quick hits: News miss at Midway; Treasurer returns $22 million in unclaimed property

Near collision at Midway

A Southwest Airlines plane narrowly avoided colliding with another plane Tuesday at Chicago’s Midway International Airport.

Video of the incident posted on X by the account Flight Emergency appeared to show the Southwest plane about to land and quickly take off again as the other aircraft crossed the runway.

According to a Southwest Airlines spokesperson, the plane landed safely after having to perform what is being called a precautionary go-around to avoid a possible conflict with another aircraft that entered the runway.

The office of Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said it returned $22 million to nearly 19,000 people in January through I-CASH, the state’s missing money program.

Companies and banks turn over uncashed rebate checks, unpaid life insurance claims, forgotten checking accounts and the contents of overlooked safe deposit boxes to the Illinois Treasurer’s Office after a few years.

The state treasurer is legally required to return unclaimed property to its owners or their heirs.

History Day judges sought

The Illinois State Museum is seeking judges and volunteers for the student Illinois History Day competition May 1 at the Bank of Springfield Center in Springfield.

Illinois History Day judges are tasked with evaluating student projects and determining which students advance to the next level of competition. Research is presented in the form of an exhibit, documentary, website, research paper or live performance. Last year, the event drew 621 students to the contest.
