Pritzker prison plan criticized
An Illinois lawmaker is condemning the state’s plans to temporarily close two prisons. Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced plans to tear down and rebuild Stateville Correctional Center. The prison is located north of Joliet in Crest Hill.
Work will begin pending capital appropriations in the fiscal budget for 2025. Officials said the state is also planning to replace Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln, but the new location has not been determined yet.
State Sen. Terri Bryant said both the DuQuion and Dixon Springs facilities were announced temporary closures and neither site has been reopened
Parolee accused of murder
A man who was released on parole the day before an attack in Chicago that left an 11-year-old boy dead and his pregnant mother injured is facing murder charges.
Officers found the boy with an injury to the chest and the woman with multiple stab wounds. Police said that Crosetti Brand was released on parole and had an order of protection against him.
Officials said Brand was released on parole in September 2023 and was placed on electronic monitoring. He was sent back to prison after a parole violation and released again last month.
Hospital reactivating
Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago is asking for patience as it begins to reactivate its hospital systems, including MyChart for patient families.
The process is expected to take several days. It comes after their network was accessed by what administrators called “a known criminal threat actor.”
