Illinois quick hits: Pritzker signing budget; MIA soldier laid to rest

Pritzker signing budget

Gov. J.B. Pritzker is expected to sign the 2025 state budget Wednesday.

Last week, the House approved $750 million in tax increases, including a tax hike on sportsbooks and businesses. Republicans argued the pace of spending growth, and the fact that some of the revenues to pay for it are temporary, set the state on pace for even a tighter fiscal year 2026.

MIA soldier laid to rest

An Illinois soldier has been laid to rest 79 years after his death in World War II.

Private Harold Poulter, a native of Charleston, was killed in action in 1945 along the German border with Luxembourg. He was later buried as an unknown in an American military cemetery in Tunisia, but was identified last January.

Poulter was laid to rest Tuesday in the Cumberland County town of Janesville.

Mega Millions winner in Illinois

Someone in Illinois is the sole winner of Tuesday night’s Mega Millions $560 million jackpot. The win comes with a cash option of about $264 million.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of matching five numbers plus the Mega Ball are 1 in over 302 million.
