Illinois quick hits: Pritzker to sign budget; two arrested during protests

Pritzker to sign budget

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is preparing to enact the fiscal year 2026 state budget. Legislators approved the budget package along party lines before the deadline last month.

The largest state spending plan spends $55.2 billion and increases taxes on phones, tobacco and vaping products, sports betting and short term hotel rentals.

Police say two people were arrested during protests in Chicago at the end of last week.

According to the Chicago Police Department, one person was taken into custody after striking an officer during the “No Kings” march and rally on Saturday. A 21-year-old Matteson man was arrested for impersonating a police officer and carrying a loaded weapon at an anti-immigration enforcement protests last Thursday.

Turkey

Anyone spotting turkeys out in the wild, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is asking you to count them and report back.

The department has set up a wild turkey survey online, or reports can be returned through a postcard provided by IDNR.

Observations are looking for young turkeys, and female and male turkey sightings through June, July and August.
