Illinois quick hits: Pritzker to testify about migrant sanctuary status; Lion Electric liquidating

Pritzker to testify about migrant sanctuary status

House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer has announced that Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the governors of Minnesota and New York will testify June 12 at a hearing on the state’s sanctuary policies.

In January, Comer launched an investigation into the policies of sanctuary jurisdictions and their impact on public safety and federal immigration enforcement. The committee is also requesting documents and communications related to their states’ sanctuary policies.

Lion Electric liquidating

Two years after a grand opening ceremony for Joliet’s Lion Electric bus manufacturing plant, the business is being liquidated.

According to Joliet Patch, the equipment inside the facility is being sold off at public auction May 15.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker, both Illinois U.S. senators and members of Congress attended the grand opening in June 2023. Pritzker told everyone that “the state of Illinois is putting itself on the map internationally and the world is taking notice.” Illinois approved tax credits for the plant.

‘Start seeing motorcycles’

The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and motorcycle safety advocates are reminding all users of the road to “Start Seeing Motorcycles” as part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

With more than 150 deaths in Illinois each year, motorcyclists are significantly overrepresented in traffic crashes and fatalities. Although motorcycles represent 3% of total vehicle registrations in Illinois, according to IDOT, they accounted for nearly 14% of traffic fatalities in 2023.
