Some look to start school later

Legislation is being discussed in Springfield that would delay the high school start time to 8:45 a.m.

Supporters told the House Education Policy Committee that students that get eight hours of sleep succeed in classes and experience better mental health. The Illinois Principals Association opposes the idea and said a one-size-fits-all approach may not be feasible.

The committee could vote on the measure this month.

Nearly 700 bobcats harvested

The 2024-2025 Illinois bobcat season concluded with 649 bobcats harvested by hunters and trappers.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources issued 2,000 bobcat permits in the bobcat lottery out of 9,200 applicants. That is 1,000 more permits than last year.

Research from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale indicated the Illinois bobcat population could support an increased annual harvest without causing the population to decline.

Students make deals website

Some students at the University of Illinois are trying to make the college experience more affordable.

Nathan Zhang and his friends are the creators of Cheepr. It’s a soon-to-be website that posts food deals both on campus and in the community.

Beyond publicized deals and promotions, Cheepr partners with businesses to offer exclusive discounts to users. So far, they have about 20 businesses and 75 deals on the site.
