Stallantis, union reach tentative deal

Jeep maker Stellantis has reached a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers union which could reopen the auto factory in Belvidere. The pact, which still must be ratified by union members, includes 25% in general wage increases over the next 4.5 years for top assembly plant workers, with 11% coming once the deal is ratified. As part of the agreement, Stellantis also reportedly offered to add a battery production facility.

Gun registry hearings this week

Illinois gun rights advocates announced they’ll be testifying at upcoming public hearings around the state’s gun ban and registry. The joint statement from the Illinois State Rifle Association, Federal Firearms Licensees of Illinois and others encourages firearms owners to “peacefully attend” meetings in person. The hearings are scheduled for Springfield Thursday morning at 9:30 and Chicago Friday morning at 9:30. A third hearing is scheduled for next week in Caseyville.

Warming buses in Chicago

With freezing temperatures affecting much of Illinois this week, the city of Chicago is taking steps to help migrants escape the harsh elements. Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Sunday that the city will provide warming buses at designated locations for those seeking asylum. Many of the migrants are currently residing in tents, which offer little protection from the cold conditions. Nearly 20,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago since August 2022.
