Illinois quick hits: Taxpayers cover $72 million in medical debt; Grubhub sold

Taxpayers cover $72 million in medical debt

The state of Illinois’ Medical Debt Relief Pilot Program has relieved more than $72 million worth of medical debt for over 52,000 Illinois residents.

Officials said the debt abolishment is the first effort as part of the state’s commitment to erase roughly $1 billion in medical debt across Illinois.

The average amount of debt abolished per person is $1,349 and the maximum debt abolished for one individual is over $242,000.

Grubhub sold

European food delivery giant JustEatTakeaway.com is selling Chicago-based Grubhub for $650 million, a fraction of the billions it spent to buy the U.S. platform just three years ago. Wonder Group, a New York-based food ordering company, is set to be Grubhub’s new owner.

In 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and a surge in demand for takeout meals, Just Eat Takeaway agreed to buy Grubhub for $7.3 billion, reportedly beating out Uber to a merger.

Superdawg mascots replaced

After getting a makeover, the iconic hot dog mascots of the Superdawg hot dog stand have returned to the roof of the popular Norwood Park drive-in.

Maurie and Flaurie, both around 12 feet tall, were taken down from the roof to be cleaned and refurbished. Superdawg has been in business at the same Milwaukee Avenue drive-in in Chicago for more than 75 years.
