Illinois Quick Hits: Teachers union sues to deliver late property tax bills

(The Center Square) – The Illinois Federation of Teachers, including the Chicago Teacher’s Union, sued Cook County Treasurer’s office to issue delayed property tax bills to county residents.

The lawsuit comes as the CTU continues to push for additional school funding for Chicago Public Schools, which must pass a budget by Friday or risk being unable to send out paychecks in September.

Maria Pappas previously said the delay in tax bills being sent is not under her control, but a larger issue the county is trying to address through reforms to the taxing process. The county is aiming to send out bills by Sept. 1, rather than the typical July 1 issuance.

STATE REP REMOVED FROM DEM CAUCUS SAYS SPEAKER ‘FAILED’ VICTIMS

State Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Streamwood, said in an op-ed Wednesday that House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch has tolerated sexual harassment, drawing comparisons to former Speaker Mike Madigan.

Crespo, who was booted from the House Democratic Caucus last year after filing his own state budget without consulting leadership, went on to call for Welch’s resignation and urged his colleagues to do the same.

He said it may be time for a push to replace Welch with the first female House speaker.
